Loy Yang B Power Station

Loy Yang B Power Station is located in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley, 160 kilometres east of Melbourne.The State’s newest base load power station produces 955 MW of electricity- 17 per cent of Victoria’s power needs- using brown coal from the adjacent Loy Yang open cut mine.Loy Yang B is owned by IPR – GDF SUEZ (70 per cent) and Mitsui & Co. Ltd (30 per cent). The partnership trades as International Power Mitsui (IPM).

The power station came on line in 1993 when the first of its two generating units began operation. The second unit commenced commercial operation in 1996.

Loy Yang B was the first fossil fuel power station in the world to gain quality accreditation to ISO 9001 and the first Australian power station to gain environmental accreditation to ISO 14001.

As well as operating to stringent environmental standards, the power station also administers a corporate Landcare program.

Since the program began in 1997 approximately 650,000 trees, shrubs and native grasses have been planted. The program was awarded the “Judges Encouragement Award” in the 2004 Prime Minister’s Encouragement Awards for Excellence in Community and Business Partnerships.
