Hazelwood West Field Project
| Since 1999, International Power Hazelwood (IPRH) has been working on our West Field Mine Development Project – providing access to and a continuation of our Hazelwood Mine coal supply.
Hazelwood has been supplied by coal from the Hazelwood Mine since the power station’s first two units went into service in 1964. The mine also supplies coal to Energy Brix Australia Corporation (the former Morwell Briquette Factory and Power Station), which in turn supplies carbon products to another local business, Australian Char. Hazelwood power station is now winning its coal from the West Field after completing South East Field operations in late 2005. Coal from West Field will keep the power station operating for the expected life of the business. IPRH has also completed construction activity on the Rivers and Roads Relocation (RRR) Project. This work comprises the relocation of a piped section of the Morwell River into a new 10 km section of natural open channel river and the construction of a new 7.5 km section of the Strzelecki Highway, south of Morwell. Project Outline Hazelwood has a mining licence and the planning and environmental approvals for Phase 1 mining operations in its West Field from 2003 through to 2009. These approvals were granted in 2001 and cover the area bounded by the existing Morwell River Diversion, Eel Hole Creek, Strzelecki Highway and Brodribb Road. Development of the West Field beyond 2009 required the existing Morwell River Diversion and the Strzelecki Highway to be relocated. Minor diversions of Eel Hole and Wilderness creeks were also required. The approvals for this Phase 2 work were granted by the State Government in 2005 through a formal EES process. It was then approved by International Power in 2006 with construction work beginning the same year. This allows IPRH to access its coal reserves allocated to the business in 1996 and ensures a constant fuel supply to its 1600MW power station. IPRH also successfully sought an adjustment to its current mining licence to enable the major infrastructure works and full efficient development of the West Field mining blocks.
