Hazelwood Power Station and Mine
| Hazelwood Power Station and Mine are located in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley, 150 kilometres east of Melbourne. The complex covers 3554 hectares.
Hazelwood Mine produces around 18 million tonnes of brown coal annually to fuel the 1675 MW capacity power station. The business directly employs around 500 staff, with 300 alliance contractors. Hazelwood supplies up to 25 per cent of Victoria’s electricity needs- some eight per cent of the National Electricity Market. The business has now gained all government approvals to access coal in its West Field. This field will fuel Hazelwood Power Station for the next 25 years or more. International Power Australia is continuing to invest in a number of new technology initiatives to further reduce CO2 emission intensity at Hazelwood. The business also seeks to utilise its by-products, such as kaolin (china clay) processing for the ceramic industry and its mineral ash for soil conditioning. In recent years, the power station and mine have won a series of awards and commendations for its workplace and environmental performance. In 2005 the Hazelwood business received an Australian Greenhouse Office Large Business Award for Outstanding Achievement in Greenhouse Gas Abatement.
