Kwinana Cogeneration Plant
|
The Kwinana Cogeneration plant is one of Australia’s most efficient and environmentally friendly power generators. It is designed and operated to have minimum impact on the environment. The combined cycle 118 megawatt (MW) plant takes every opportunity to make full use of the synergies within the Kwinana industrial area. Heat recovery steam generators optimise the heat from the exhaust of the natural gas driven turbines. This heat is transferred to steam and delivered to the BP Refinery. It is also used to drive a steam turbine and more electricity is created. Recycled, purified and cleaned water from “black water” (treated sewage) managed by the Water Authority and approved by the Health Department is routed into the power plant to provide boiler feed and cooling water system makeup. This takes consumption load off the potable water system reticulated to homes within Western Australia. Kwinana has comprehensive systems in place to ensure compliance with the Department of Environmental Protection requirements. |
